Cavities and Fillings: Causes, Treatment, and Prevention Tips

Cavities & Fillings: What you need to know…

You brush, you floss… and yet, somehow, you still get a cavity. It happens, and it’s more common than you might think.

At Spring Hill Dental, we help patients of all ages understand what cavities are, how to treat them, and, most importantly, how to prevent them from becoming bigger problems.

Let’s take a closer look at how fillings work and how you can prevent needing one in the future.

What Exactly Is a Cavity?

A cavity (also called dental decay) is a small hole that forms in your tooth when bacteria and acids break down the enamel, the protective outer layer.

If left untreated, a cavity can:

  • Grow deeper and larger
  • Reach the soft layer beneath (called dentin)
  • Eventually, the nerve is exposed, leading to pain or infection

That’s why catching cavities early is so important. The sooner we treat them, the less damage they do and the more of your natural tooth we can preserve.

“Why Do I Need a Filling? It Doesn’t Even Hurt!”

One of the most common things we hear from patients is: “Why do I need a filling if it doesn’t hurt?” The answer? If it already hurts, the cavity is likely extensive, and you may now need a root canal or even an extraction.

Our goal is to avoid those more invasive (and expensive) treatments. Catching cavities early, when they’re small and painless, means we can fix the issue with a simple filling. Waiting too long allows decay to spread, leading to more aggressive procedures down the line.

How Fillings Fix Cavities

When we place a filling at Spring Hill Dental, here’s what typically happens:

  • We numb the area so you’re completely comfortable
  • Remove the decayed portion of the tooth
  • Clean and prep the area to eliminate bacteria
  • Place a strong, tooth-colored filling (no silver!) to seal and protect the tooth

It’s quick, comfortable, and one of the best ways to stop decay in its tracks.

Can AI Detect Cavities Early?

Yes! At Spring Hill Dental, we utilize AI-enhanced digital X-rays to help detect even the smallest signs of decay, often before they become visible or cause pain. That means less guesswork, more precision, and better outcomes for your smile.

How to Prevent Cavities

Good news: Most cavities are preventable. Here’s how:

  • Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss daily to remove food and plaque between teeth
  • Limit sugary snacks and acidic drinks like soda and juice
  • Drink water often
  • Visit your dentist every 6 months for cleanings and check-ups
  • Consider fluoride treatments or dental sealants, especially for kids

Cavities Aren’t Just for Kids

While children are more prone to cavities, adults get them too, especially around older fillings, between teeth, or near the gumline. That’s why regular dental exams and imaging are so valuable, no matter your age.
